What is COPPA?
COPPA is a federal law that requires websites and apps to obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting, using, or disclosing personal information from children under 13.
Forktale is designed with COPPA compliance at its core. We treat every user as if they're under 13, applying the strictest privacy protections to everyone.
How We Comply
Parental Consent Required
Parents authenticate with Apple Sign-In and create child profiles. Children cannot create accounts independently.
Minimal Data Collection
We only collect what's necessary: child's name, age band, and story preferences. No location, photos, contacts, or browsing history.
Parental Access & Control
Parents can view, export, or delete all child data at any time through the app settings.
No Third-Party Sharing
We never sell, rent, or share child data with third parties. Your data stays with us.
No Advertising
We never show ads to children. Our business model is subscriptions, not attention.
Content Moderation
Multi-layered filtering ensures age-appropriate, wholesome content
Input Filtering
Before generating a story, we scan user input for inappropriate content:

- •Violence and weapons
- •Adult themes
- •Personal information (PII)
Output Validation
After AI generation, we validate story content before showing it:
- •Scary words and themes
- •Death and loss
- •Weapons and combat
- •Romantic themes
What Happens When Content is Blocked?
If moderation detects inappropriate content, we:
- Return a generic "couldn't generate" error to the user
- Log the violation (without PII) for system improvement
- Never expose the blocked terms to users
- Suggest trying a different theme or story type
We err on the side of caution. If something might be inappropriate for any age band, we block it.

Parental Controls
You're in control of your family's data
Create & Manage Child Profiles
Add up to 5 child profiles (depending on subscription tier). Set each child's name and age band to get personalized, age-appropriate stories.
Export Child Data
Download a complete copy of your child's data at any time. Includes profile info, story history, and preferences in a parent-friendly format.
Delete Account & Data
Permanently delete your child's profile and all associated data. This action cannot be undone. Data is removed from our servers within 30 days.
You must type "DELETE" to confirm, preventing accidental deletions.
